Corrimal Public School: A Legacy of Community and Learning

Corrimal Public School was established in 1890, making it one of the oldest public schools in the Illawarra region (Corrimal Public School Centenary Committee 1990). Located between the escarpment and the ocean, the school has long been central to the Corrimal community, fostering a strong sense of continuity, pride, and belonging across generations (NSW Department of Education 2022).

Early Buildings and Memorial Heritage

The original school building, now known as A Block, was completed in 1890 and served as the foundation for the school's development and growth (Corrimal Public School Centenary Committee 1990). In 1919, B Block was constructed as a memorial building to honour students who served in World War I, particularly those who lost their lives (Corrimal Public School Centenary Committee 1990).

For many years, a symbolic eternal flame burned in what is now Duruga, near a window. This act served as a tribute to former students who did not return from war (Alumni Recollections 2023). In 1946, a formal unveiling ceremony was held at the school to commemorate ex-pupils who had died in World War II (Illawarra Mercury 1946).

During the Second World War, a bunker or underground shelter was reportedly constructed beneath the school grounds, near what is now the soccer field. This was designed as a precautionary measure in case of a Japanese air raid (Chilby 2020).

Generational Ties and Community Spirit

Corrimal Public School continues to serve many of the same families across multiple generations. Recent reports note that many students are second or third generation attendees, reflecting the school's ongoing significance to local families and its enduring place within the Corrimal community (NSW Department of Education 2022).

This strong tradition of generational continuity reflects the school's role as a place of learning, belonging, and collective memory.

Aboriginal and Local Heritage

Corrimal Public School stands on the land of the Traditional Custodians of the Illawarra, the Dharawal people, and the school community acknowledges and respects their ongoing connection to Country.

The name “Corrimal” is believed to be derived from “Kurimul,” the name of a local Aboriginal warrior figure from Dreaming stories. This name was originally applied to a peak on the escarpment, now known as Broker’s Nose (Wollongong City Libraries 2020; Wikipedia 2024).

This historical and cultural context reminds us that the story of Corrimal Public School exists within a much older and continuing cultural narrative.
