Starting big school is an exciting new chapter for your child and family. It marks the beginning of their formal education, where they will develop important skills, meet new friends, and start building a strong foundation for learning. Our school community is dedicated to supporting your child through this transition to ensure it is smooth and positive. On this page, you’ll find useful information, tips, and resources to help prepare your child and family for their first day and beyond. Together, we’ll make starting big school a great experience!

A day in the life of Kindergarten

Every day is filled with a balance of learning, play and creativity. A typical day at Big School might include:

The 8:30am bell has gone and we're feeling a little hungry so we might head to Breakfast Club to get some warm toast and fruit to fill our bellies, ready for a big day of learning!

When the 9am bell rings, we line up and meet our teacher for morning welcome where we then head into class to start our day.

In the morning, we have our literacy lesson where we do lots of reading, writing and phonics.

Don't be scared of not knowing what to do! Our amazing teachers are always there to help us with our work or if we're feeling stuck!

At school we have Crunch 'n' Sip where we stop for a quick break to eat some yummy fruit and veggies.

We know you might be worried about sitting at a table and chair all day. Don’t worry! Throughout the day, you’ll have lots of chances to move around. We often use our whiteboards on the floor which helps us talk about out work as a class and join fun class discussions. Learning can happen all kinds of ways!

Our teachers love reading to us. Listening to stories helps us learn new words, imagine exciting adventures, and discover new ideas. Storytime is one of our favourite parts of the day!

At lunch, we love to play in one of our many amazing spaces available to students.

After lunch, we dive into hands on maths activities. Counting, sorting, and exploring numbers.

Once a week we have Technology Class! We learn all about how to log onto a computer (we even get out very own log in), how to type and identify applications and all about computers. As we get older we will even do some of our assignments on computers!

After our middle session, we head out to recess. Our "Clubs" area is always a big hit with the kids. We have our cubbies, lego and a whole bunch of awesome toys to play with out in the sun!

Clubs is also a great opportunity to meet and play with other kids from all the different classes and grades.

In art, you get to try new things and make cool pictures and creations. You’ll use lots of colours and different materials to show your ideas and have fun being creative every day!

On Thursday, K-2 all go out for weekly sport! We play lots of fun games and move our bodies to help keep us fit and strong.

Every Friday, we enjoy Gardening Class with Miss Clare, where we explore planting and caring for seedlings, grow delicious food in our vegetable garden, and discover how composting and plant life cycles work.

We love to visit Ms Swan each week in the library. We get to borrow books and take them home to read.

Sometimes we have events at Big School. The older kids always come and help us to make sure we know what to do. During the Cross Country, they even run with us so we know where to go!
